Community-based Approaches in the Treatment of Hypertension and Colorectal Cancer Screening (Mister B)

The Mister B study partners with barbers and other community leaders and organizations in all 5 boroughs of New York City to reach out to Black men 50 and over. After meeting with the barbers or organization leadership, the Mister B team collaborates with the organization to host a screening event for men at the organization and the community in which the organization is located. The Mister B team provides free blood pressure screening and health education for all. Men who meet study eligibility criteria have the option of participating in the research study. Study participants are reimbursed for their time and receive free haircut at a participating barbershop. Barbers are reimbursed for the haircuts they give and receive a bonus incentive for every 25 eligible men recruited from their shop.
